PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Guide for Residential Rooftop Solar
Understand current PM Surya Ghar subsidy amounts, household eligibility, application stages and practical preparation for rooftop solar in Maharashtra.
Updated 5 August 2026. PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India programme supporting grid-connected residential rooftop solar. For an eligible household, the central financial assistance reduces the effective project investment after the installation and required commissioning process.
The subsidy is not a discount invented by an installer, and it is not paid for every type of electricity connection. The application, technical feasibility, empanelled vendor, installation, inspection and bank-account details must follow the official process.
Current central subsidy amounts
The central financial assistance for eligible individual residential households is:
| Installed capacity | Central subsidy |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 maximum |
The assistance is calculated at ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the additional third kW. Capacity above 3 kW does not increase the central subsidy beyond ₹78,000 for an individual household.
These amounts come from the Government of India’s programme approval and MNRE operational guidelines. Always check the official PM Surya Ghar portal for the live application process and current notices.
Who the residential subsidy is for
The central assistance is intended for eligible grid-connected residential consumers. An independent home normally needs its own residential electricity connection and suitable roof space. The programme also contains provisions for group housing societies and resident welfare associations for eligible common facilities, subject to the scheme’s capacity and process rules.
The household should not assume eligibility merely because panels can physically fit on the roof. Consumer details, connection category, technical feasibility and application status need to be confirmed through the official portal and DISCOM workflow.
Commercial and industrial electricity connections do not receive this residential central subsidy.
How the process generally works
The exact portal screens and DISCOM steps can change, but the overall journey includes:
- Register the residential consumer on the official PM Surya Ghar portal.
- Submit the rooftop solar application and request technical feasibility.
- Select an eligible or empanelled vendor through the prescribed process.
- Install the approved grid-connected system.
- Submit installation details and complete inspection or commissioning requirements.
- Provide the required bank information for subsidy disbursement.
The government and DISCOM control approval and payment. A solar vendor can support the customer with documents and process coordination but should not present the subsidy as money it personally guarantees.
Prepare these details before you begin
Keep the following ready:
- a recent electricity bill with readable consumer and connection details;
- the mobile number and identity details required by the portal;
- bank-account information that matches the required applicant details;
- basic information about roof ownership and access;
- roof photographs and a note about tanks, shade and nearby buildings;
- an idea of annual electricity use, preferably from twelve bills.
The latest bill helps begin the conversation, but system capacity should still be connected to annual units, daytime demand and usable roof area. Read our guide to sizing rooftop solar from an electricity bill for the engineering side of that decision.
Subsidy does not replace good system design
A ₹78,000 maximum subsidy can materially improve a home solar proposal, but the project still needs to work for decades after the subsidy is received. Compare equipment support, structure and waterproofing decisions, electrical protections, workmanship, monitoring and local service.
Also understand the operating system you are buying. A standard on-grid plant is normally the lowest-cost option for a home with reliable grid supply, but it shuts down during a grid outage. A hybrid system adds battery backup at additional cost. Our on-grid, off-grid and hybrid comparison explains the difference.
Use official sources for live policy information
Scheme dates, application steps, technical requirements and portal instructions can change. Use the official PM Surya Ghar portal and Ministry guidelines as the source of record. This article explains the process; it does not replace the programme rules or an eligibility decision.
For a local review in Ichalkaranji or Kolhapur district, send SolarTech your bill through the residential solar assessment. We can connect the bill, roof and current application pathway before recommending capacity.
